About

HRPP education and training in research ethics, regulations, and methodology are fundamental to the University’s mission to promote the highest standards in human research protections.

The University of Virginia requires all individuals conducting research involving human participants to complete an initial online Human Subjects Research Protection training course and then to recertify every 3 years. This is offered through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI).

Beyond the CITI training requirement, HRPP educational offerings include a wide array of learning opportunities, such as online microlearning, continuing education sessions, and graduate/undergraduate courses for credit.

Training

Depending on whether you are involved in Health Sciences Research (HSR) or Social/Behavioral Sciences Research (SBS), CITI has Human Subjects Research Protection training for Researchers and Staff/Board Members which is required.  Additionally, there are modules for the Certified IRB Professional (CIP).

The Virginia IRB Consortium is an annual conference that provides opportunities for IRB staff, IRB members, and researchers throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia to collaborate on issues related to human research protections and IRBs.

Formerly known as "IRB 101," this course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of key concepts in Human Subjects research, including information about the history and function of Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and relevant regulations, an introduction to UVA's IRB offices, and best practices and tips for successful protocol submissions.

Training and resources specific to Clinical Research including in-person training for clinical researchers and links to training for systems such as Florence eBinders, OnCore, and CRConnect.
